Guided tour of Recanati – province of Macerata
Town of ancient origins, “Centro Mondiale della Poesia e della Cultura“, the home town of Giacomo Leopardi and Beniamino Giglio, Recanati has known how to splendidly maintain the memory of the poet who celebrated the natio borgo selvaggio (his home village) in his creative writings, just as it has honoured Beniamino Giglio, one of the greatest Italian tenors.

Villa Colloredo Mels, home to a collection of works of art of the Municipality, it is host to famous works of art by Lorenzo Lotto (Annunciation, Polyptych of Saint Domenico);
Cathedral of S. Flavio (Saint Flavio), Cathedral of S. Flavio (Saint Flavio), erected in the 18th century upon a building dating back to the 1000s, it conserves a precious 16th-century coffered ceiling as well as the tomb of Pope Gregory XII who renounced becoming pope and going off to Recanati;
Piazza Leopardi, dominated by the impressive construction of the Municipal Building, was dedicated to the poet from Recanati of that name in 1898, where we find his statue. Beside this is the Torre del borgo (Town Tower), which was celebrated in Leopardi’s verse;
Church of San Domenico, with its fine Renaissance door, it contains an admirable fresco by Lorenzo Lotto, unique in the Marche;
Persiani Historical Theatre, Persiani Historical Theatre, of the 18th century, it is dedicated to the composer from Recanati and is today home to the Beniamino Gigli Museum with memorabilia belonging to the great tenor;
Noble Palazzo Venieri, the most significant building of the town, has a beautiful courtyard with a balcony, from where we can admire a beautiful view over the Marche countryside and the sea;
Complex of S. Agostino (Saint Augustine) Complex of S. Agostino (Saint Augustine) with the Tower of “Passero solitario”, 17th-century church by the hand of Ferdinando Bibbiena; in the cloister rises the tower which inspired Leopardi in one of his most well-known poems;
Piazzetta del Sabato del Villaggio, scattered with memories of Leopardi, here we find Palazzo Leopardi, home of the poet and where you can visit the famous Library and the Church of Santa Maria in Montemorello (Saint Mary in Montemorello), where Leopardi was baptised;
Colle dell’Infinito, is a celebrated place that provided inspiration to the Recanati poet for some of his poems which have become immortal (Infinito; Alla luna); from here we have a magnificent view over the Marche hills.
